It takes a strong woman to stop living a lie and break away from a relationship that isn’t working. To celebrate women who are after a better life and Women’s History Month, we thought it would be empowering to look at these trailblazing women in news, sports and politics.
Here are 10 strong women, or groups of women, who are making their mark on the world:
- Togethxr – This media and commerce company owned by women is designed to elevate female voices, particularly around sports. The founders are all celebrated athletes themselves: Sue Bird, WNBA player with four championship titles and four Olympic gold medals; Chloe Kim, the youngest snowboard halfpipe Olympic gold medalist; Simone Manuel, who won four gold medals in the 2016 Summer Games and become the first Black woman to win an Olympic swimming event; and multiple World Cups champion Alex Morgan.
- Maria Taylor – Maria is the first Black woman to co-host College GameDay on ESPN. In addition to serving as a reporter and host for ESPN, she covers college football for the SEC Network and has also been a reporter for ABC Saturday Night Football. The first woman to host the SEC Network’s traveling show, SEC Nation, Maria also covers college basketball.
- Sheryl Sandberg – As the chief operating officer of Facebook, Sheryl has been instrumental in taking the company from millions of dollars of losses when she joined in 2008 to a profit of $18.5 billion in 2019. Part of her success stems from positioning the social media giant as a platform for small business advertising, with ad revenues reaching $69.7 billion in 2019.
- Kristin Welker – Kristin gained worldwide notice when she calmly and masterfully moderated the final 2020 presidential debate. She excelled at keeping both candidates in line and focusing on the issues and questions, skills that were missing from prior debates. She now serves as NBC’s co-chief White House correspondent.
- Dana Canedy – A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Dana is now senior vice president and publisher of Simon & Schuster and the first Black woman to serve in this role. She won the Pulitzer for her series on race in America, which appeared in The New York Times in 2001.
- Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala – As of March 1, Ngozi became the first woman and first African to serve as director-general of the World Trade Organization. Nigeria’s first woman finance minister, she also served as the country’s foreign minister. As an economist and international development expert, she is also a former managing director of the World Bank.
- Oprah Winfrey – This media mogul overcame childhood abuse to become the first Black woman to own her own production company. An Academy Award-nominated actress, she has also launched a magazine and a cable network, hosted one of television’s most popular syndicated shows, and become the richest Black woman in the world.
- Rachel Lindsay – While she might be better known for her roles as a contestant on The Bachelor and then lead of The Bachelorette than for her career as an attorney, Rachel is quickly becoming a media dynamo. She hosts several podcasts as well as MTV’s Ghosted: Love Gone Missing and ESPN Radio’s Game Night, and also serves as a correspondent for Extra TV.
- Denise Mercedes – Plus-size model, fashion blogger and influencer, Denise also runs her own clothing line, Rebdolls. The fashion retailer focuses on trendy fashion for women from size 0 to 32. Denise strives to be a voice for women of all shapes and sizes, and has been featured on BuzzFeed as well as in a number of different publications.
- Amy Purdy – A double amputee as the result of a case of meningococcal meningitis so bad she went into septic shock and was given a 2% chance of survival, Amy has persevered. In addition to being a Paralympic bronze medalist snowboarder, motivational speaker and former contestant on both The Amazing Race and Dancing with the Stars, she founded Adaptive Action Sports, a nonprofit organization that helps those with permanent disabilities get involved in action sports.
